THE 3rd Edition KIDNEY AID WALK

We are a fitness and wellness training institute. We have organized and managed the Kidney Aid Walk for Anciento family for the past two years. In a bid to include other stakeholders we hereby wish to invite you to participate in this year’s Kidney Aid Walk holding on Saturday 30th of November 2024. @ 7:30am. Takeoff and Endpoint Maitama Garden Ibrahim Babangida Road Maitama Abuja 

This will be the 3rd edition of the walk.

The walk is an advocacy for optimal Kidney health via sensitization on the dos and don’t that keep the Kidney functioning optimally with focus on exercise as a sure tool for recuperation and prevention. We also want to avail the public the understanding on how to access medical attention towards checkups and treatment.

Kidney disease is on the rise resulting in countless deaths due to lack of knowledge and understanding on how to access checkups, understand symptoms and receive treatment. Our previous advocacy effort in collaboration with the Julie Donli Kidney Foundation has been very fruitful in the past for this reason we have decided to involve a Nephrological clinic and other stakeholders to support and join the walk to create awareness and treatment access.

Participation will avail necessary exposure to much more people and also be a great community effort on your path.

THE HUMAN KIDNEY

The human kidneys are essential organs that perform a wide range of critical functions in the body, primarily related to maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance, filtering waste products, and regulating blood pressure. They play an integral role in the body’s overall health and homeostasis.

Anatomy of the Kidneys

Humans have two kidneys located on either side of the spine, just below the rib cage, in an area called the retroperitoneal space. Each kidney is roughly the size of a fist and shaped like a bean. The major anatomical parts of the kidney include:

  1. Renal Cortex: The outer layer of the kidney that houses most of the nephrons (the kidney’s functional filtering units).
  2. Renal Medulla: The inner region of the kidney, containing structures called renal pyramids. Each pyramid contains tubes that transport urine from the nephrons to the kidney’s central area.
  3. Renal Pelvis: A funnel-like structure in the kidney’s center that collects urine and channels it to the ureter.
  4. Ureter: A tube that transports urine from the kidney to the bladder for storage.

Each kidney receives blood from the renal artery, which branches off the abdominal aorta. After filtration, the blood exits the kidney through the renal vein and re-enters systemic circulation.

Structure and Function of the Nephron

The nephron is the basic structural and functional unit of the kidney, with each kidney containing around 1 million nephrons. Each nephron is composed of several components, each playing a specific role in filtering blood and forming urine:

  1. Glomerulus: A network of tiny blood capillaries enclosed within a structure called Bowman’s capsule. Blood enters the glomerulus under pressure, forcing water, ions, and small molecules out of the blood and into Bowman’s capsule, beginning the filtration process.
  2. Bowman’s Capsule: Surrounds the glomerulus and collects the filtered fluid (glomerular filtrate).
  3. Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT): The first part of the tubule system, where reabsorption of water, glucose, amino acids, and certain ions (e.g., sodium) occurs.
  4. Loop of Henle: This U-shaped section of the nephron creates a concentration gradient in the kidney medulla, allowing for the reabsorption of water and sodium. It helps the body conserve water and produces urine that is more concentrated.
  5. Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT): This part of the nephron further regulates potassium, sodium, and calcium levels under hormonal control, particularly by aldosterone.
  6. Collecting Duct: Multiple nephrons connect to a single collecting duct. Here, further reabsorption of water occurs under the influence of antidiuretic hormone (ADH). The collecting duct ultimately leads the now-concentrated urine to the renal pelvis.

Functions of the Kidneys

The kidneys perform several critical functions for the body’s health:

  1. Filtration and Waste Removal: The kidneys filter out toxins, waste products, and excess ions from the blood. These waste products are eventually excreted in the form of urine. The primary waste products removed by the kidneys are urea, creatinine, and uric acid.

  2. Fluid and Electrolyte Balance: The kidneys regulate the body’s water and salt (sodium) balance. When there is excess fluid in the body, the kidneys excrete more urine; when fluid levels are low, they conserve water, producing concentrated urine.

  3. Acid-Base Balance: The kidneys help maintain the body’s pH balance by excreting hydrogen ions and reabsorbing bicarbonate ions. This function is crucial for preventing the body from becoming too acidic or too alkaline.

  4. Blood Pressure Regulation: The kidneys regulate blood pressure by adjusting the volume of blood (by adjusting water excretion) and releasing renin, an enzyme that activates the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which increases blood pressure by constricting blood vessels and increasing sodium and water reabsorption.

  5. Erythropoiesis Regulation: The kidneys produce erythropoietin, a hormone that stimulates red blood cell production in the bone marrow. This function is particularly important in response to low oxygen levels, as red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body.

  6. Calcium and Phosphate Balance: The kidneys play a role in bone health by converting vitamin D to its active form, calcitriol, which promotes calcium absorption in the intestines. They also help maintain appropriate levels of phosphate, which is essential for bone mineralization.

Regulation of Kidney Function

Kidney function is regulated by hormones and various physiological mechanisms to maintain the body’s internal balance. Major hormones involved include:

  1. Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH): Secreted by the pituitary gland, ADH controls water reabsorption in the kidneys, promoting water conservation in times of dehydration.
  2. Aldosterone: Produced by the adrenal glands, aldosterone increases sodium reabsorption in the distal tubule, leading to water retention and increased blood volume.
  3. Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS): Activated by the release of renin from the kidneys, RAAS controls blood pressure and fluid balance by causing vasoconstriction and promoting sodium and water reabsorption.
  4. Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP): This hormone is released by the heart in response to increased blood volume and pressure, promoting sodium and water excretion by the kidneys to lower blood pressure.

Kidney Diseases and Disorders

Several diseases and disorders can impair kidney function, some of which include:

  1. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): A long-term condition where the kidneys gradually lose function. CKD is often caused by diabetes or high blood pressure and can lead to kidney failure.
  2. Acute Kidney Injury (AKI): A sudden loss of kidney function due to factors like severe dehydration, trauma, or toxins.
  3. Kidney Stones: Hard deposits of minerals and salts that form in the kidneys and can cause severe pain as they pass through the urinary tract.
  4. Glomerulonephritis: Inflammation of the glomeruli, which can lead to kidney damage and impaired filtration.
  5. Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD): A genetic disorder characterized by the growth of cysts in the kidneys, which can lead to kidney enlargement and loss of function over time.

Protecting Kidney Health

To maintain healthy kidney function, several lifestyle practices are recommended:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration supports kidney function and helps to flush out toxins. Drinking adequate water can also prevent kidney stones.
  2. Monitor Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar: Managing these levels can help prevent kidney damage, especially for those at risk of diabetes or hypertension.
  3. Limit Salt and Processed Foods: Reducing salt and processed foods can lower blood pressure, reducing stress on the kidneys.
  4. Avoid Excessive NSAIDs and Painkillers: Prolonged use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can damage the kidneys, so these should be used with caution.
  5. Exercise Regularly: Physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels, all of which benefit the kidneys.
